Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 4,682 sheep comprising of 2,723 prime hoggs, 114 spring lambs and 1,845 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th April 2021.

New season spring lambs sold to a top price per kilo of 385p for Texel lambs shown by GT Beattie, Guardsmill, Gretna with top per head of £163 achieved for Suffolk lambs from HM Martindale, The Land, Ecclefechan.

Overall average 325.4p (SQQ 340.5p)

A similar show of 2,723 prime hoggs sold to a fast trade achieving a marvelous overall sale average of 298.6ppk (SQQ 308.1p)

All classes of well finished hoggs sold to serious rates and more can be sold to vendor advantage.

Topping the price per kilo was for Texel hoggs selling to 342p consigned by D & Y Wilson, Plumpe, Gretna.  

Top price per head of £171 for a Beltex hogg from J Robertson & Son, Becks, Langholm. Heavy hoggs sold very well with many pens realising £155-£165 per head. A fantastic run of 212 heavy hoggs; predominantly Texel and Suffolk Mules, consigned by Messrs M Dart, Tetcott, Devon sold very well averaging a fantastic £159.14 per head.

Lightweight hoggs again sold to serious rates topping at 339p for a pen of 22 Texel cross hoggs consigned by JI Mccrone, Beech Croft, Ivegill. Blackface hoggs topped at 338p for a pen of 23 expertly finished hoggs consigned by Banks Farm, Scofton, Notts. Cheviot hoggs topped at 332p consigned by Newlands Farms. Lightweight hoggs are required again for next weeks sale.

A similar show of 1,845 ewes were forward. All classes of ewes sold to serious rates of return being short of purchaser requirements.

Heavy ewes topped at £208 for Texel ewes from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries, with several pens selling over £190.

Mule ewes sold to a big trade topping at £147 for a pen of heafty ladies consigned by Messrs R Neill, Upper Tinwald, Torthorwald with several pens braking £130 +   

Hill ewes were off the clock again topping at £139 for Cheviot ewes shown by J Halliday & Sons, Springwells, Lockerbie. Blackface ewes topped at £127 consigned by W & PF Walton, Penpeugh, Hexham whilst Swaledale ewes were a mans price topping at £120 consigned by JD Yeates, Woodhouse, Hexham.    

Rams sold astronomical rates topping at an eye watering £232 for Suffolks from Heatherglen, with pen after pen of tups breaking £190.
