Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,914 sheep comprising of 4,467 prime hoggs, 121 spring lambs and 3,326 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th May 2021.

A good show of cast cows and bulls forward with the majority being native bred. All classes were in big demand and met a competitive trade, with more numbers required on a weekly basis. Topping the sale at £1,113 was an Angus from W Semple, Brackley, Campbeltown. Galloways sold to £1,063 from the Firm of J Tullie, Bowanhill, Hawick, which also achieved top per kilo of 173p. Beef Shorthorn cows to 148p from AN & HS Tomkins, Hallsford, Hethersgill and Angus cows to 147p from M Baxter, Kilnhill, Brampton.

New season spring lambs sold to a top price per kilo of 414p for Texel lambs shown by R McArthur, Lower Moor, Brydekirk with top per head of £174 achieved also for Texel lambs from the same home who’s run of 15 Texel lambs went on to average 44kg, 351p, £157.73.

Overall average 355.5p (SQQ 349.2p)

A larger show of 4,467 prime hoggs sold to a fast trade achieving a sensational overall sale average of

308.0ppk (SQQ 313.6p)

Topping the price per kilo was for a pen of 18 Beltex hoggs selling to 393p consigned by RL & AR Phillips, Fir Trees, Harrogate.

Lightweight hoggs were in serious demand and being the trade of the day again. Topping at 393p for the pen of Beltex hoggs consigned by Andrew Phillips, Fir Tree that topped the sale. Other continentals topped at 359p for a pen of Texel hoggs consigned by P Bouch, Copperthorns, Kirkoswald.

Cheviot hoggs topped at 347p for a penful of 27 very well finished hoggs consigned by Messrs Moir, Cairness, Aberdeen, whose run of smalls averaged a mighty 337p.

Blackface hoggs topped at 336p for a pen of 25 well fed hoggs consigned by A Taylor, Heathery Hall, Lanark, who’s run of 258 predominantly Blackie hoggs went on to average 322p.  

Suffolk hoggs topped the price per head at £212 from S Sinclair, Haven View, Wick.

Heavy hoggs to extreme rates with most pens of well finished hoggs making between £160-£170 per head.

A much larger show of 3,326 ewes were forward. Over fat ewes were slightly easier on the week whilst all other classes maintained last week’s blistering rates of return.  

Heavy ewes topped at £202 for Texel ewes from L Skelton, Low House, Dearham.  

Hill ewes topped at £120 for Cheviot ewes shown by J Anderson & Son, Priesthaugh, Hawick. Blackface ewes sold at £118 consigned by H & M Connell, Minsca, Waterbeck and from Messrs Teasdale, Kellah, Haltwhistle.     

Rams sold to £205 for Texels from J Thompson & Son, Farlam Hill, Brampton with Bluefaced Leicesters to £202 consigned by BD & MS Hope, Albierigg, Canonbie.
