Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,039 sheep comprising of 3,420 spring lambs and 4,619 cast ewes & rams and 18 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th August 2021.
A larger show of cast cows was forward, although less quality on offer, but all classes still remain in demand and meeting high rates of return. More numbers required on a weekly basis to meet buyer demand at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,197 for Beef Shorthorn cows shown by Tanlawhill Farming, Westerkirk, with Angus cows selling to £1,173 from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie, who also sold Simmentals at £1,016. Friesian cows topped at £1,093 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton.
Top price per kilo of 170p for Angus cows from Acherbeck, who had Simmentals at 154p. Friesians sold at 154p from Hethermill with Beef Shorthorns to 146p from Tanlawhill and British Blues to 145p from The Flatt, Roadhead.
A larger show of 3,420 new season spring lambs was forward being dearer than other centres at the beginning of the week, and considerably dearer on the week. All classes in demand and short of purchaser requirements.
Best export lambs regularly exceeded 270p topping at 302p for a pen of Texel lambs shown by A & H McColm, Crailloch, Newton Stewart, who also topped the price per head at £158 again for Texels.
Heavy lambs proved once again very good to sell with demand outstripping supply, with 37 pens of sheep realising in excess of £130 per head.
Commercial export lambs sold to a big trade regularly trading between 240 - 250ppk.
Lightweight lambs (32-38kg) sold very well, with many more wanted to meet an unprecedented demand.

Another large show of 4,619 ewes was forward to again, another increased ring of purchasers. Heavy ewes would be slightly easier on the week, whilst leaner types sold to a blistering trade. Keep them coming while the trade is there.

Mule ewes topped at £116 for a penful from JP Gray, Unthank, Whittingham.
Hill ewes topped at £110 for Cheviots from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm.
Rams to £185 for Suffolks from R King & Sons, Gospel Hall, Jedburgh.
