Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,044 sheep comprising of 3,635 prime hoggs and 3,409 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th February 2022.

A smaller show of 3,635 prime hoggs were forward. A very poor show of hoggs forward this week with quality in very short supply, whilst the best bred and best fed hoggs were still in big demand. Overweight hoggs proved harder work albeit the better end of heavies still good to sell.  

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 383p from R & J Lines, Killocraw, Campbeltown, who run of 50 superb hoggs went on to average 356p and £142.74.  

Top price per head of £160 for Beltex hoggs shown by Dalchirla Farms Ltd, Meikle Fieldie, Glenfarg.

An overall sale average of 256.5ppk (SQQ 263.9ppk) was achieved.

A similar show of 3,409 ewes were forward, to the same competitive ring of purchasers, trade being dearer by quite a margin across the board especially for heavy ewes of all breeds and horned ewes.

Texel ewes topped at £235 from High House, with Beltex ewes selling to £200 from JC & JW Tulloch, Rigfoot, Glasgow. An abundance of ewes realized over £200 and best Texel and Beltex ewes are wanted to satisfy a unprecedented demand here at Longtown.  

Mules topped out at £135 consigned by D Henderson & Sons, Dunn, Caithness.

Hill ewes topping at £125 for Cheviot ewes from A Tullie Farming, Whitchesters, Hawick, with Blackfaces to £116 from W & B Nichol, Lawston, Newcastleton, achieving a breed average of £89.25 for Blackface ewes.  

Rams again sold to a serious trade topping £200 for Suffolks from Branteth.
