Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,355 sheep comprising of 5,336 prime hoggs and 2,019 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th April 2022.
A larger offering of cast cows were forward and met a marvellous trade throughout with all classes in demand. The sale topped at 196p for a Limousin shown by G Famelton, Horseholm, Gilsland. The lengthy journey from Girvan was made worthwhile for N McBurney, Balsalloch who sold Limousin cows at 195p and 194p, going on to top the price per head at £1745.25, purchased by David Holmes. More numbers are required on a weekly basis here at Longtown to satisfy customer demand.
The first spring lambs of the season were forward and topped at 321p and £140 for Suffolks shown by I & J Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan.
A larger show of 5,336 prime hoggs were forward. Again, trade saw a lift on the week. Still a mixed show of hoggs forward.
Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 454p and 444p from CJ McWhirter, Banks Farm, Lockerbie, who also went on to top the price per head at £200 again for Beltex hoggs. The proceeds of these two hoggs have kindly been donated to the Ukrainian Disaster emergency committee by Mr CJ McWhirter. These two hoggs were bought by West Scottish Lamb and Pickstock Foods respectively. Well done to all involved.
Smalls in big demand and well worthy of the trip up from Cheshire was an outstanding run of 633 expertly finished, predominantly Blackie hoggs consigned by M/s JH & KA Thornhill, Haresteads Farm, Lyme Park averaging 36kg and £105 per head or 292ppk, more will be required for next weeks sale as the hoggs start to come good.
A very satisfying overall sale average of 270.4ppk (SQQ 287.3pk) was achieved.

Heavy ewes were again a superb trade with Texel ewes selling to a top of £285 from Viewley.
A penful of North Country Cheviots topped at £177 from H Mill, Achscrabster, Caithness.
Mule ewes sold to a top of £159 from A & A Hogg, Milnholm, Langholm.
Hill ewes topped at £142 for Cheviots from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick, Blackie ewes sold to a top of £137 for a penful consigned from Harelaw hill.
All ewes averaged a colossal £139.26.
Rams topping at £258 for Texels from Seat Hill Ltd, Laversdale.
