Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,184 sheep comprising of 2,338 cast ewes & rams and 3,846 prime lambs at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th April 2022.

OTM’s sold at extreme rates being compatible to other local centres, more grazing types forward.

Hereford cows to 177p/kg (x2) North Howes, Annan, Simmental to £171p/kg Langholm, Argyll, Galloway to 167p/kg Balliemeanoch, Dalmally, Holstein Friesian to 163p/kg Hethermill, Kirklinton.

Beef cows to £1,150.50 North Howes.

Dairy cows to £1,059.50 Hethermill.

A smaller entry of 3,846 prime hoggs were forward with large numbers of both heavy hoggs and hill bred hoggs forward, leaving an overall sale average of 260.2p (SQQ 270.8p) was achieved

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 359p from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls, Capheaton.

Topping the price per head at £172 for Beltexs from BS Hennessy, Orton Rigg, Great Orton.

Export weight hoggs and smalls continue to be a massive demand, with many more well fleshed hoggs in these categories required to satisfy customer demand.

A larger show of 2,338 ewes were forward to the usual ring side of buyers, with big strong ewes selling at recent rates, although small plain ewes would be easier on the week as more of this type were forward.

Hill ewes topped at £136 for Cheviots from CB Services, Old Hall, Stockport. Blackface ewes sold to a top of £129 from W & PF Walton, Penpeugh.

Rams topping at £238 for Suffolks from Upperlands.
