Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,748 sheep comprising of 3,899 prime hoggs, 68 spring lambs and 2,781 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th May 2022.
A much improved entry for both quality and quantity, which saw extra buyers at ringside ensuring all classes met a strong competitive trade. As always, more numbers are required on a weekly basis to meet buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,538 for a Limousin shown by BE & S Davidson, Bellfield, Longtown, who also sold Charolais at £1,412. Other Limousins to £1,165 from Wanwood Hill. Beef Shorthorns sold to £1,484 and £1,085 from JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick. Angus cows to £1,459 and £1,214 from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm, with others to £1,360 and £1,166 from J Cameron, High Machriemore, Argyll.
Top price per kilo of 220p and 216p for Angus from High Machriemore. Charolais to 214p from Bellfield with Limousins at 213p from Hopestead, Eyemouth.
A nice show of 68 prime lambs proved too few for requirements and more numbers required, selling to a top of £147 for Texels shown by M Smith, Mount Farm, Blackford.
A mixed show of 3,899 prime hoggs were forward and met a more selective trade, with heavy hoggs in very strong demand and short of requirements. Export and lights hoggs were also good to sell if good meat. Store types were harder to sell on the week.
Texel hoggs topped the price per kilo at 297p from Sharplaw Farms, Kelso.
Top price per head of £154 for Texel hoggs shown by A & C Watson, Rowan Garth, Whitehaven.
An overall sale average of 257.8ppk (SQQ 259.7ppk) was achieved.
