Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 4,873 sheep comprising of 2,169 spring lambs and 2,704 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st July 2022.

A larger show of 25 cast cows and bulls were forward, although more of mixed offering and less quality available. All classes still remain very much in demand with more numbers required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at £1,660 for Charolais from D Brown, Temple House, Alston with British Blue cows selling to £1,436 from D MacKinnon, Low Tirfergus, Campbeltown. Top per kilo of 198p for Beef Shorthorns shown by J Anderson & Partners, Rowanburnfoot, Canonbie and 196p for Limousins from Waterhead of Dryfe, Lockerbie.

A larger show of 2,169 prime lambs were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers with all classes being markedly less on the week. Well fleshed/well fed lambs were still wanted whilst grassy types met increased resistance.  

Top price per kilo of 321p for Beltex lambs from G Gillespie, High Street, Campbeltown.  

Top price per head of £166 for heavy Texel lambs from RD Fleming, Hillhead, Kirkpatrick Fleming.

A much larger entry of 2,704 cast ewes and rams, the largest show of ewes seen in the North of England this week, handled with ease and a trade to match. All classes of ewes in big demand as purchasers are able to fill wagons comfortably with the numbers that are on offer here at Longtown on a weekly basis. More numbers are required to fulfil this increased purchaser demand and orders.    

Heavy ewes sold to £300 per head for Texel ewes from Harehead Farms, Cranshaws, Duns, an abundance of ewes sold at £210 plus.

Mule ewes sold very well again topping at £152 consigned by Messrs Dodd, Roanstree, Newcastleton with countless pens surpassing £132 plus.  

Easycare ewes sold particularly well topping at £132 for a penful consigned by CG & JM Dinning, Fallowfield, Hexham.   

Hill ewes topped at £124 for Cheviots from TE Hutchinson, Chapel, Moffat.    

Rams sold to £212 for Texels from A & T Wilson, Baryerrock, Newton Stewart.
