Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,052 sheep comprising of 3,702 prime lambs and 4,350 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th August 2022.
Cast cows and bulls continue to sell at recent high rates and remain very much in demand. More numbers required on a weekly basis to meet buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,672 for Herefords from W Skilling, Cara View, Campbeltown. Hereford cows to 173p from A Clements, Balmore, Isle of Gigha.
A larger show of 3,702 prime lambs were forward, all classes of lambs sold to a better trade than expected achieving an overall average of 245.8ppk. Best end lambs and heavies as long as they were full of meat proved very good to sell, more well finished lambs can be sold to advantage whilst leaner sorts are best marketed in the store.
Top price per kilo of 364p for Texel lambs from Ballywilline Farm Partnership, Ballywilline, Campbeltown.
Top per head of £153 for Texels shown by TD & JR Byers, Cubbyhill, Longtown.

A similar entry of 4,350 cast ewes and rams were forward, a big entry of lean light ewes proved more difficult to sell whilst in spec continental ewes were still in demand.
Heavy ewes sold to £228 per head for Texel ewes from J Sugden, Kirkbog Lodge, Thornhill.
Hill ewes topped at £110 for Hill Cheviots from FR Crew, Gall Farm, Boreland.
Rams sold to £182 for Texels from M Dunlop, Corstane, Broughton.
