Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,573 sheep comprising of 3,853 prime lambs and 4,720 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th September 2022.
A larger and very mixed show of 3,853 prime lambs were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers. Lambs were forward wet, meat in demand whilst leaner sorts are still better marketed on a Tuesday in the store market. More well finished lambs can be marketed on a weekly basis to vendor advantage, as we find them in short supply.
Top price per kilo of 323p for Beltex lambs from I & M Bunting, Bridgestone, Castle Douglas. Top per head of £160 for Texels shown by A Jackson, Maulscastle, Cummertrees.

A similar entry of 4,720 cast ewes and rams were forward to a full ringside of purchasers ensuring all classes were well bid for. The best quality continental ewes sold to similarly high rates of return of last week. Commercial heavy ewes sold to a solid trade being £4-£6 up on the week. Smaller, leaner hill ewes coming forward in larger numbers and being easier on the week, whilst good meated horned ewes were still very much in demand.
Heavy ewes sold to £268 per head for Texel ewes from High House.
Hill ewes topped at £122 for Hill Cheviots from D & K Graham, Birsca, Lockerbie.
Rams sold to £218 for Charollais from Beckfoot.
