Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,988 sheep comprising of 3,100 prime lambs and 4,888 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th September 2022.
A larger show of 24 cast cows and bulls was forward to an active ring of five competitive buyers, ensuring all classes of the mixed entry proving in demand. More numbers can be handled with ease and are required on a weekly basis here at Longtown to fulfil demand.
The sale topped at 258p for a Limousin shown by Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston, who sold others at 196p. Charolais sold to 196p from Shankbridge End Farm Ltd, Hethersgill. Luing cows to 183p from JW Davidson & Co., Crosslee, Selkirk with Angus selling to 182p from T Young & Sons, Glencraigs, Argyll. Simmentals sold to a top of 174p from Skipness Estate, Argyll with Shorthorns to 172p from Willie Skilling and Herefords from J MacDonald & Co., Drumyeonmore, Isle of Gigha selling at 170p.
Top price per head of £1,965 was achieved for an Angus from Glencraigs, Argyll and Limousins from Wanwood Hill to £1,909. Charolais topped at £1,705 from Shankbridge End and Shorthorns to £1,668 from Cara View. Skipness Estate sold Simmentals to £1,635 with Friesians topping at £1,306 from CT & J Wigham & Sons Hethermill, Kirklinton.
A smaller show of 3,100 prime lambs was forward. A mixed entry of lambs sold to an increased ring of purchasers being firmer on the week. Heavy and better bred lambs in big demand as long as they were well fed.
Top price per kilo of 331p for Beltex lambs shown by M & M Byrne, Thornthwaite Close, Wigton. Texel lambs sold to a top of £154 from RM & P Armstrong, Oaklands, Longtown.

Rams sold to £235 for Texels from Crumhaughhill, Hawick.
