Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 11,018 sheep comprising of 5,514 prime lambs and 5,504 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th October 2022.
A larger show of cast cows were forward with more quality on offer and five active buyers at ringside ensured all classes met a competitive trade. More numbers are required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,410 and £1,355 for Blonde cows shown by J Graham & Sons, Orchard Farm, Hawick, who also sold British Blues at £1,011. Angus cows topped at £1,232 and £1,186 from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie who also sold Simmental cows at £1,200 and £1,051. Galloways from J & M Walker, Raeburnfoot, Eskdalemuir sold to £1,067.
Top price per kilo of 187p for Blondes from Orchard Farm, with others at 172p. Friesians sold to 178p from Messrs Beard, Dormansteads, Roweltown. Galloways to 175p from Raeburnfoot with Simmentals to 174p from Archerbeck, who sold Angus cows at 172p and 168p.
A bumper show of 5,514 prime lambs were forward, a lot of lambs were out in force nationally resulting in trade being ever so slightly easier on the week although well finished lambs were still wanted.
Top price per kilo of 304p for Beltex lambs from A Watret, Pendicle, Ruthwell.
Texel lambs sold to a top of £143 consigned from J & C Hastings, The Glen, Dumfries.

A similar mixed entry of 5,504 cast ewes and rams were forward, trading at very much the same rates as last week, best heavy Texel ewes being dearer on the week. Lean horned ewes were a plenty whilst heavy well fleshed ewes were in short supply.
Heavy ewes equaled the centre record at £305 per head for Texel ewes from R & A Harrison, Hazel Head, Wigton, who’s run of outstanding ewes went on to average an eye watering £253.
Hill ewes topped at £116 for Hill Cheviots from R Osborne, Castlehill, Durisdeer.
Rams sold to £235 for Suffolks from A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick.
