Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,469 sheep comprising of 5,049 prime lambs and 5,442 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th October 2022.

Another large show of cast cows was presented to a competitive ringside of five active buyers, ensuring all classes were yet again very much in demand. More numbers can be handled with ease here at Longtown - take advantage of the capped commission and payment on the day. The sale topped at £1,584 for Angus cows shown by JG Murray & Son, Branxholm Braes, Hawick, who sold others at £1,157. Other Angus to £967 from Gartnagrenach Farm Ltd, Argyll. Hereford cows sold to £1,440 from FR Crew, Gall, Lockerbie, who also sold Beef Shorthorns at £1,435 and £1,001. P Bell, Boghall, Newcastleton also had Beef Shorthorns at £1,232. Simmental cows topped at £1,334, £1,210 and £1,074 from Branxholm Braes. Friesian cows to £1,184 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton.

Top price per kilo was 199p achieved for Beef Shorthorns from Ellary Farms Ltd, Lochgilphead with others to 184p from Kirndean & Gall Farm. Simmentals to 188p and 163p from Branxholm Braes, who also sold Angus at 180p and 178p. Hereford to 160p from Gall Farm with Friesians also a 160p from Hethermill.

Another large show of 5,049 prime lambs was forward to a full ring of purchasers. Best heavies and best exports still in demand. Commercial lambs sold to similar rates on the week, whilst lightweight lambs proved to be a firmer trade.

Top price per kilo of 316p for Beltex lambs from G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck.

Charollais lambs sold to a top of £147 consigned from Viewley Farm.

A very mixed entry of 5,442 cast ewes and rams were forward with heavy ewes in short supply as the sale consisted mainly of hill/lightweight ewes and feeding types. Heavy ewes and best Texel/Beltex ewes are in big demand and are keenly sought after every week.   

Heavy ewes topped at £275 from WS Robson & Co., Yatesfield, Otterburn.  

Hill ewes topped at £117 for Blackfaces from A Scott-Noble, Borthwick Brae, Hawick.  

Rams sold to £220 for Lleyns from H Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries.
