Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,823 sheep comprising of 6,244 prime lambs and 2,579 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th December 2022.

Another pleasing entry of cattle was forward, although less quality on offer and a large majority being hill bred Galloway and Blue Grey cows. The sale topped at £1,647 for a Charolais from JT Fleming & Son, Falnash, Hawick with British Blue cows to £1,132 and £1,031 from GW Dinnin, Nether Albie, Waterbeck. Hereford cows topped at £972 from J Johnstone, North Howes, Annan.

Top price per kilo of 152p for Herefords from North Howes, who also sold Belted Galloways at 151p. British Blues to 149p from Nether Albie with Charolais at 142p from Falnash. Blue Grey and Luing cows sold to 140p from J Higgs Farms, Arkleton, Langholm.

A much larger show of 6,244 prime lambs was forward and included in today’s sale was the annual Christmas Prize Show & Sale of prime lambs which was kindly sponsored by Murray Farmcare with the judging duties in the capable hand of Stephen Wilson of Corby Hill Butchers, Carlisle whom gave every pen his due care and attention.

After much deliberation Stephen awarded his championship to Messrs Cavers, Sorbie for their outstanding pen of pure bred Beltex lambs which later went on to realise the top price of the day at £200/500ppk selling to local regular supporters West Scottish Lamb.

The reserve championship was awarded to the first prize pen of Texel lambs consigned by M/s Ward, Whitonestone Hill which went onto realise £160 selling the judge, Messrs S Wilson, Corby Hill. Out with the show lambs, there was a very mixed show of lambs forward, customers are urged to sell their leaner/store lambs in the store market here on a Tuesday to realise their true potential. Rams again sold to recent high rates topping at £212 for Texels from CD Scott, Falla, Jedburgh.
