Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,862 sheep comprising of 4,352 prime hoggs and 2,510 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 5th January 2023.
A good entry of cast cows were forward for the first sale of the New Year, although it comprised of mainly non-farm assured and hill cows, all classes remain in demand and met a brisk trade. More numbers are required on a weekly basis to fulfill buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale topped at 205p (x2) for Galloways from Eskdalemuir Forestry Ltd, Clerk Hill, Eskdalemuir. Top price per head of £1,107 for Galloways from Clerk Hill, with Angus cows to £1,097 from RJ Anderson & Son, Penchrise, Hawick and Friesians to £1,095 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton.
A smaller show of 4,352 prime hoggs was forward which sold to a large ring of competitive buyers. Trade continues at last week’s rates, with lightweight and export lambs full of flesh plus heavyweight hoggs being good to sell, and the 45-48kg hoggs being the hardest to cash.

Top per kilo of 318p for Beltex hoggs from Messrs R Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries.

A smaller show of 2,510 cast ewes and rams was forward. Heavyweight well fleshed ewes met strong demand being £10-15 up on the week, with Texel ewes topping at £242 and £240 from A C Clark, Fine View, Glenluce.
An improved show of hill ewes were forward with these £3-5 better on the week with Cheviot ewes selling to £111 consigned by R Vevers & Co., Burnfoot Hill, Lockerbie.
Strong heavy rams very much in demand with any amount selling at £180+ and to £230 for Suffolks from G S Shaw & Co., Smailholm Mains, Kelso.
