Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,920 sheep comprising of 4,789 prime hoggs and 4,131 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th February 2023.

A better offering of cast cows and bulls forward with the majority being hill bred, nevertheless, all classes continue to meet a great demand. Many more numbers can be handled with ease here at Longtown and are required on a weekly basis to satisfy the competitive buyer demand. The sale topped at 184p for Whitebred Shorthorns from G Jackson, Blackburn, Newcastleton with Belted Galloways to 178p from JR & CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Lockerbie. Angus to £1,276 from J Higgs Farms, Arkleton, Langholm.

A smaller show of 4,789 prime hoggs were forward to the same ringside of competitive purchasers who were all very keen for supplies, resulting in a far superior trade than most centres and deadweight outlets this week.  With over half the entry consisting of hill bred hoggs a very pleasing average of 247.4ppk was attained and more hoggs could have been sold to advantage.

Top per kilo of 345p for Beltex hoggs from M & J Kennedy, Lurgan, Perth.

A larger show of 4,131 cast ewes and rams forward. An increased ring of purchasers ensured all classes were competitively bid for resulting in a slight increase on last week’s high rates of return. 

Handy weight ewes and lean meated continental ewes proved to be the trade of the day, whilst heavy ewes and pure bred Texel and Beltex ewes upheld last week’s trade. 

Texel ewes topped at £270 from Douganhill Farm, Orchardton Mains, Castle Douglas

Hill ewes to £116 for Cheviots from A Reid & Co., Glendearg, Eskdalemuir.  

Rams sold to £200 for Charollais from Heatherglen.
