Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,014 sheep comprising of 5,377 prime hoggs and 4,637 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th March 2023.
Another good entry of cast cows were forward to a competitive ringside of buyers ensuring all classes again met a huge trade, with the sale averaging 190p throughout and numbers proving far short of requirements. The sale topped at 262p for an Angus shown by TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm with Charolais to 260p from PF & EJ Bloxham, Linnbridgeford, Waterbeck, who sold others at 228p (x2) and 222p. Other Angus to 196p (x2) from Sorbie.
Top per head of £1,547 for Charolais from Linnbridgeford, with others at £1,300 and £1,254 from the same home. Angus topped at £1,509, £1,467 and £1,460 from Sorbie with Limousins to £1,218 from WD & RJ Thorburn, Parks, Beattock.

A similar entry of 5,377 prime hoggs were forward. Small hoggs and export hoggs continue to sell at a fast pace for all breeds, as long as they are well finished. Heavies took a slight rise from last week’s rates.
Top price per head of £164 for Beltex hoggs shown by D & C Rodger, Comlongun Mains Cottage, Clarencefield.
Top per kilo of 381p for Beltex hoggs from R & J Lines, Killocraw, Argyll.

Incorporated in the weekly sale of prime hoggs was the prize show and sale of Cheviot hoggs kindly sponsored by PJ Tractor Parts, Longtown. An entry of 1,242 Cheviots were forward which included 16 pens of 20 show hoggs.
Judging was left in the very capable hands of Gerallt Roberts of Field Fresh Trading Ltd who after some deliberation awarded the championship to the first prize medium hoggs consigned by A Reid & Co., Glendearg, Eskdalemuir, these hoggs went onto realise £114 being purchased by Field Fresh Trading Ltd.

A similar show of 4,637 cast ewes and rams forward. All classes of ewes continue to sell well. Good lean continental ewes are becoming scarce and are actively sought after for the coming weeks.

Hill ewes to £124 for Cheviots from AK Hill Agri, Morningside, Wishaw.
Rams sold to £220 for Texels from M Watson, Four O Boot, Carlisle.
Cast ewes and prime hoggs were consigned to Longtown from all corners of the British Isles, from Northern Ireland, Devon, Okehampton and Cheshire, to the Yorkshire Dales, the northern counties, Argyll, Aberdeenshire, Thurso and Caithness all to take full advantage of the most competitive ring of buyers in the country.
