Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,121 sheep comprising of 6,614 prime hoggs and 3,507 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd March 2023.
A larger show forward with trade brisk throughout for all classes. More numbers are required on a weekly basis to meet buyer requirements. The sale peaked at £1,394 and £1,369 for Friesian cows shown by CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton. Whitebred Shorthorns sold to £1,290 from K Welters, Whithaugh, Newcastleton with Angus cows to £1,227 and £1,159 from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm. Belted Galloways sold to £1,115 from JR & CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Tundergarth.
Top price per kilo of 191p for Friesians from Hethermill, who sold others at 185p, whilst Angus cows topped at 190p and 186p from Sorbie.

A larger show of 3,507 cast ewes and rams forward. A decent entry of ewes sold to the same ring of very competitive purchasers ensuring all classes maintained last weeks high rates of return.
Texel ewes topped at £275 and £270 from AC Clark, Fineview, Glenluce.
Hill ewes to £116 for Cheviots from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.
Rams sold to £230 for Texels from DA Wells, Middle Shipley, Co Durham.
Cast ewes and prime hoggs were again consigned to Longtown from all corners of the British Isles, from Northern Ireland, Devon, Okehampton and Cheshire, the northern counties, Argyll, Aberdeenshire, Thurso and Caithness all to take full advantage of the most competitive ring of buyers in the country.
