Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,188 sheep comprising of 3,023 prime hoggs and 2,165 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th April 2023.

Cast cows continue to sell at recent high rates with all classes required on a weekly basis to meet buyer demand. The sale topped at £1,820 for Angus cows shown by TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm with Simmental cows selling to £1,717 and £1,648 consigned by Shield Farming Co., Hagg Farm, Morpeth. Top price per kilo of 214p and 212p from Teviotdale with Angus at 200p from Sorbie.

A smaller show of 3,023 prime hoggs were forward to a full ringside of purchasers, who were all very keen for supplies resulting in a firmer trade for the well finished hoggs, leaner sorts are still better sold in the store market at Longtown on a Tuesday. A notable shortage of exports and heavy hoggs nationwide and these classes of hoggs are actively sought after and wanted for the coming weeks trade.  

Top price per head of £180 for Beltex shown by H Cockburn & Partners Kingside, Peebles and from D & C Rodger, Comlongun Mains, Clarencefield.

Top per kilo of 434p again for Beltex hoggs from Comlongun Mains, Clarencefield.

Many more can be sold to vendor advantage on a weekly basis. The trade is set to stay, and potential vendors are urged to take advantage of this trade.
