Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,248 sheep comprising of 3,682 prime hoggs, 77 spring lambs and 3,489 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th May 2023.
A larger and more mixed offering of cast cows and bulls were forward to a competitive ringside of buyers, ensuring all classes continue to sell at recent high rates and many more are required here at Longtown on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer demand. The sale peaked at £1,780 for a Beef Shorthorn from JDM Thomson, Newlands, Eaglesfield with top per head of 241p for Beef Shorthorns from Pilmuir, Hawick and Angus to 239p from Messrs Baxter, Kilnhill, Gilsland.

77 Spring lambs sold to 400p for Texels shown by HM Martindale, The Lands, Ecclefechan, which also topped the price per head at £200. Suffolks sold to £194 from I & J Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan.
Spring lamb numbers are increasing and as purchasers swap over to spring lamb, this trade looks solid. More well meated lambs can be sold to advantage and are wanted for the forthcoming weeks. Export weights and heavy lambs are at a premium.

A larger show of 3,682 prime hoggs were forward to the same ringside of purchasers. Fed and well finished hoggs were firmer on the week and in massive demand. Leaner store types sold to realisation. More well fleshed fed hoggs are actively sought after and can be sold to vendor advantage.
