Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,308 sheep comprising of 2,628 prime hoggs, 1,893 spring lambs and 3,787 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 22nd June 2023.

A larger although more mixed offering of cows were forward to a busy ringside of buyers, ensuring all classes continue to sell at recent high rates. More numbers are required on a weekly basis here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,513 for an Angus shown by W Skilling, Cara View, Campbeltown with Shorthorns topping at £1,368 from Meikle Whitriggs Farms, Corrie. Top price per kilo of 202p for a Holstein from D Barbour & Co., Aucharua, Southend with Fleckvieh cows selling to 200p from J Rennie, Tarbert, Isle of Gigha.

A much larger show of 1,893 spring lambs forward.

Top per kilo of 378p for Texel lambs from Newlands, Penrith. Top price per head of £180 for Suffolks shown by Messrs Sherwen, Low Thorney, Egremont with Texels also at £180 twice from WH & M Sisson, Fenton, Brampton and first time vendor Cole Hill Farm, Elwick, Co Durham respectfully.

All lambs sold to phenomenal trade being far dearer than any other center or dead weight outlet in the beginning part of the week.

Messrs Barbour, Carsegowan sold an outstanding run of Suffolk bred lambs to top at £168 to average 43kg £148 for 229 sold.

Messrs Walby, East House sold a run of very well bred export lambs to average a staggering £143 or 357ppk, also making the worth wile trip to Longtown was Messrs Scott, Corneyside, Matfen who also sold a seriously well bred run of export lambs to average £144 or 343ppk

A similar show 3,787 cast ewes and rams were forward. Commercial ewes and leaner types were marketed to vendor advantage being a lump dearer than other centres, whilst over fat ewes met a bit of resistance.
