Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,219 sheep comprising of 2,357 prime lambs and 2,862 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th July 2023.
A larger show of cast cows forward, with the majority non farm assured. In following with the national trend, all classes proved harder to cash with leaner cows especially meeting more resistance. The sale topped at £1,337 and £1,333 for Angus cows shown by TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm. Limousins sold to £1,183 from J Wyllie, Meinbank, Waterbeck with Shorthorn x to £1,092 from Meikle Whitriggs, Corrie. Top per kilo of 186p from E & D Barker, Palmer Hill, Brampton.
A similar show of 2,357 prime lambs proved to be very good to sell with numbers way short of purchaser requirements. Heavy lambs and best export lambs were the call of the day. Topping the sale was a single Texel cross lamb realising £168 for shown by R Sandison, Smerral, Caithness.
M/s Nicholson, Bombie, Kirkcudbright sold a great run of heavy lambs topping at £158 achieving and averaging £140.10 or 2.98ppk.
Top price per kilo for the third week was another fantastic pen of Beltex x lambs realising 328ppk consigned by now regular vendors M/s J & A Moralee, Hardriding Farm, Bardon Mill.
Light weight lambs continued to sell at high rates of return with Beltex lambs to 310ppk consigned by M/s Nixon, Longlea farm, Wark, Hexham. Hill lambs also sold to improved rates with a penful of Blackface lambs consigned by M/s Halbert, Prospect House going on to realise £87 for 35kgs or 249ppk.
All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

A smaller show of 2,862 cast ewes and rams was forward, to the same competitive ring of purchasers. Hill ewes met some resistance whereas stronger well fleshed lowland ewes still sold well. Pure bred Texel ewes and Beltex ewes were very short of purchaser requirements and will continue to be wanted for next weeks sale
Texel ewes topped the sale at £275 consigend by M/s Watson, Lowdyke
Hill ewes to £96 for Cheviots from A & A Hogg, Milnholm, Langholm.
Rams also sold to £190 for Texels from A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick and for Charollais from Septre Farming Co., Deuchrie, Dunbar.
