Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,255 sheep comprising of 2,603 prime lambs and 3,652 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 3rd August 2023.
A similar although more mixed show of cast cows were forward. Plainer, lean cows continue to meet resistance with fleshed cows proving easiest to sell. The sale topped at £1,392 for a Limousin from J Carruthers & Son, Woodhall, Eastriggs with Shorthorns to £1,176 from J Higgs, Arkelton, Langholm, Angus topped at £1,120 from JW Davidson & Co., Crosslee, Ettrick, with Simmentals at £1,018 from N Retson, Maidencots, Abington and Ayrshires selling to £994 from E & DE Horn, Slack House, Gilsland. Top price per kilo of 174p from Woodhall, Eastriggs.
Annual Prize Show & Sale for Young Handlers
Incorporated in todays sale was the Annual Prize Show & Sale for young handlers which was kindly sponsored by Farmers Guardian. A pleasing show of 18 lambs were presented to the judge Mr David Sloan, Rigghead, Dumfries, who awarded the following prizes with Overall Champion going to Alex Batey, Heathery Knowe, Longtown with his 43kg selling at £170, and also receiving the Hugh Taylor Memorial Cup. Reserve Champion going to Anna Telford, High Parkfoot, Roadhead with her 38kg lamb selling at £150.
Topping the sale in both the price per head and per kilo was a single Texel lamb at £178 and 404p shown by Reuben Linsley, Cottage Farm, Boldron.
Congratulations to all the young handlers that took part in todays show and sale, the quality of lambs that were put before the purchasers was second to none and a credit to the future of agriculture.

A larger show 3,652 cast ewes and rams were forward, heavy ewes sold to improved rates with every other class being very similar on the week. More ewes can be sold to vendor advantage on a weekly basis as heavy ewes and best selling Texel or Beltex proved very good to sell being way short of purchaser requirements.
Texel ewes topped the sale at £290 from Douganhill Farm, Orchardton Mains, Castle Douglas.
Hill ewes to £114 for Cheviots from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.
Rams sold to £235 for Texels from RS Catlin & Son, Hassendean, Hawick.
