Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,224 sheep comprising of 2,925 prime lambs and 5,299 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 24th August 2023.
2,925 prime lambs sold to the same ringside of purchasers, with trade meeting some resistance achieving an overall average of 252.4p (SQQ 252.8p). Best export lambs and best heavy lambs were still in demand and proved good to sell.
Selling to top price per kilo of 355p for Beltex lambs shown by M & M Byrne, Thornthwaite Close, Wigton.
Top price per head of £140 twice, first for Beltex lambs shown by WC & E Bell & Son, Low Houses, Low Row and secondly for Dutch Spotted lambs from S Herraty, Low Ranachan, Argyll.
Two lambs were donated to raise money for Breast Cancer Charity, with the first one selling to £270 donated by JL & HR Gledson, Buteland, Hexham and the second one selling to £260 donated by Hindmarsh Partners, Warkshaugh, Otterburn.

Another bumper show of 5,299 ewes forward to another packed ringside of purchasers. Heavy ewes still selling to recent extreme rates. A big rise in the number of horned ewes and plain ewes forward saw the boning ewes harder to cash whilst feeding ewes sold to a fast trade with several new orders ringside. Heavy best texel ewes were in short supply and are actively sought after by purchaser’s request.
Topping at £250 twice, firstly for Texel ewes from WS Robson & Co, Yatesfield, Otterburn and secondly again for Texels from J Dixon & Son, Lesson Hall, Wigton.
Light ewes to £140 for Cheviots from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick
Rams sold to £200 for a Texel from Messrs Bell, High House, Brampton.
