Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,143 sheep comprising of 4,044 prime lambs and 5,099 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 31st August 2023.

Cast cows were scarce of buyer requirements and met a brisk trade throughout, more numbers are required on a weekly basis here at Longtown to fulfil demand. The sale topped at 174p for a Saler from A Tullie Farming, Whitchester, Hawick, who sold others at 162p. Angus cows sold to 170p from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm with Whitebred Shorthorn x cows at 170p from Sorbietrees Farm Ltd, Newcastleton. Top per head of £1,287 and £1,239 for Salers from Whitchesters and Angus to £1,224 from Sorbie.

A larger show of 4,044 prime lambs forward. Fed lambs still seeing happy returns with leaner lambs holding some resistance and these would be easier marketed on a Tuesday’s store sale.

A large entry of hill lambs were forward today consisting of 29% of the sale due to spaining time in full swing.

The sale peaked at 333p for Beltex lambs shown by J & A Moralee, Hardriding, Bardon Mill.

Top per head of £157 for Texels from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.

All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

Another large show 5,099 cast ewes and rams were forward, albeit a plainer offering with a shortage of the best and heavy ewes which would easily be sold to vendors advantage. As with the lambs, a large show of hill ewes forward.  

Texel ewes topped the sale at £305 from A & H McColm, Crailloch, Port William.

Hill ewes topped at £112 for Cheviots from WR Girvan & Son, Berry Fell, Hawick & M Strang-Steel, Philiphaugh Estate, Selkirk.  

Rams sold to £270 for Suffolks from S Sinclair, Haven View, Wick.
