Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,086 sheep comprising of 3,780 prime lambs and 6,306 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 5th October 2023.

A larger offering of 34 cast cows were forward with the majority feeding cows. Additional buyers at ringside ensured all classes were well bid for and met a brisk trade throughout. Larger numbers of cows can be handled with ease here at Longtown on a weekly basis. The sale topped at 183p for a Limousin shown by Poltalloch Farms, Nether Largie, Argyll with top per head of £1,496 for an Angus from M Baxter, Kilnhill, Gilsland.

A smaller show of 3,780 prime lambs forward. All classes maintained last week’s rates of return and all well finished sheep were in big demand, whilst leaner lambs proved harder to place.  

The sale peaked at 390p for Beltex lambs shown by D & C Rodger, Comlongun Mains Cottage, Clarencefield.

Top per head of £165 for Texels from D Barbour & Co., Aucharua, Campbeltown.

Another huge show of 6,306 cast ewes and rams were forward. A ring full of 19 active purchasers ensured all classes met a buoyant trade throughout with numbers being handled with ease.
