Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,651 sheep comprising of 5,379 prime lambs and 5,272 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th October 2023.
A much larger show of cast cows forward, with 70% of the sale consisting of hill cows. As more numbers are forward throughout the country, all classes met a steadier trade. The sale topped at £1,260 for a Simmental from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie with Limousin cows to £1,222 from N McBurney, Balsalloch, Girvan and to £1,204 from WS Waugh, The Flatt, Roadhead. Angus cows sold to £1,218 from Moorfields and Beef Shorthorns topped at £1,140 and £1,102 from P Bell, Kirndean, Newcastleton.
Top price per kilo of 165p for Limousins from The Flatt, with others to 163p and 161p from Balsalloch, who also sold Angus cows at 145p. Beef Shorthorns to 159p and 152p from Boghall.
A bumper entry of 5,379 lambs were forward. All classes met some resistance as national numbers jump, albeit lambs still sold to average £14-£16 infront of the same day last year. Better bred heavies and best export lambs still proved good to sell with numerous pens realising £140+
The sale peaked at 344p for Beltex lambs shown by J Muir & Son, Cleughbrae, Dumfries.
Top per head of £164 for Texels from AJ & LJ Haston, Dearham Hall, Dearham.
All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

Another large show of 5,272 ewes forward, well fleshed heavy ewes still maintained recent high rates of return whilst lighter ewes met some resistance. Lean ewes still sold well as grazing orders are in full swing.
Texel ewes topped the sale at £260 from S & A Moore, Mains of Balhall, Brechin.
Hill ewes topped at £108 for Cheviots from J & E Mallinson, Old Newton, Moffat.
Rams sold to £270 for Bluefaced Leicesters from RA McClymont & Son, Kirksteads, Yarrow.
