Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,074 sheep comprising of 5,001 prime lambs and 5,073 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th November 2023.

Another mixed offering of cast cows and bulls forward, the majority being hill cows and many non farm assured. The sale topped at £1,036 for a Galloway from DE Eastham, Longburgh Fauld, Carlisle with Friesian cows selling to 142 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton and Galloways to 135p from J Jackson & Son, Cumstone, Lockerbie.

A much larger show of 5,001 lambs went under the hammer today at Longtown, meeting a blistering trade throughout. A very mixed show of lambs selling to a much improved trade across the board. The well fed heavies and best exports sold to extreme rates, also seeing lightweight lambs in big demand. Plenty of heavy lambs being £158 plus and better export lambs 300ppk plus.

The sale peaked at 354p for Beltex lambs shown by T Hill & R Wright, Mill Farm, Doncaster.  

Top per head of £200 for Texels from R Lawson, Home Farm, Carnwath.

Continental light weight lambs sold to 323ppk, whilst Blackface lambs sold to 285ppk or £94 for 33kg consigned by Kirkland Farming, Kirkland, Sanquhar. Lightweight lambs full of meat are in serious demand and are required on a weekly basis to come through the live ring, all classes sold this way, completely eclipse other outlets.

All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

Another large show of 5,073 ewes was forward. Heavy lean meated ewes of all classes in massive demand and lightweight ewes maintained last week’s good rates of return. Numbers keenly sought after for next week’s sale.

Texel ewes topped the sale at £240 from Westside Farms, Capheaton, Newcastle.  

Hill ewes topped at £106 for Cheviots from MJ & CM Hutchinson, Fala Hill, Heriot.  

Rams sold to £175 for Charollais from Beckfoot.
