Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,926 sheep comprising of 5,136 prime lambs and 4,790 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 16th November 2023.

Another good offering of cast cows were forward with trade remaining similar. The sale topped at £1,120 for a Limousin from DJ Moffat, Rigg Smiddy, Rigg with Friesian cows selling to £1,007 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton. Top per kilo of 166p from Rigg Smiddy, Friesians to 146p from Hethermill and Galloways also topping at 146p from JW Forster & Son, Smithsteads, Bewcastle.  

A substantial show of 5,136 lambs were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers, well fed and dry lambs proved very good to sell being every bit as dear as the previous week’s trading, grass fed lambs and lambs lacking finish met some resistance. More well finished lambs are required by purchaser request and can be sold to vendor advantage. 

The sale peaked at 342p for Beltex lambs shown by A Hoggan, Maryholm, Dumfries.

Top per head of £165 for Texels from WD Stephen & Co., Meikle Geddes, Inverness.

All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

Another fine show of 4,790 ewes were forward with all classes seeing a slight improvement, especially lightweight Cheviot ewes which would see a £11-£13 increase, plain ewes would also see an increase. 

Best Texel, Beltex and heavy ewes and lean meated ewes are in short supply and are required every week at Longtown. 

Texel ewes topped the sale at £255 from GJ Toppin, Bascodyke Foot, Ainstable who’s run of 23 marvellous Texel ewes went on to average £220.65.

Hill ewes topped at £106 for Cheviots from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm.

Rams sold to £235 for Beltex from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Raughton Head.
