Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,395 comprising of 5,082 prime hoggs and 4,313 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 11th January 2024.

A small offering of OTM’s forward with trade looking sharper. The sale topped at £1,578 and 241p for a Friesian shown by CT & J Wigham & Son, Hethermill, Carlisle. Numbers required to fulfil buyer demand on a weekly basis here at Longtown.

A similar show of 5,082 hoggs were forward to a very competitive ring of purchasers ensuring all classes proved to be very good to sell being firmer on the week.

Topping the sale per head was £176 for Texel hoggs shown by Messrs F McGowan, Incheoch Farms, Blairgowrie. Pen after pen of heavy hoggs sailed over £155, being short of requirements.

Per kilo the sale topped at 386p for Beltex hoggs from D Smith, Scobshaugh, Kirriemuir.

All classes of well finished hoggs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

A smaller show of 4,313 ewes were forward to a full contingent of purchasers who were armed with plentiful orders to ensure all classes met a flying trade. Ewe trade is on the move and numbers are wanted for the up and coming weekly sales here at Longtown, to satisfy an ever growing demand!!

Again, a huge entry of over 2,000 hill ewes forward proving very good to sell being dearer on the week, with best Texel and Beltex ewes in short supply, selling to serious rates of return and numbers wanted for the foreseeable future.    

234 ewes selling over £210 and 97 selling over £250, these results are unrivalled, and ewes are sold in this center to benefit vendors.

Topping the sale at £300 for Texel ewes from K Wight, Midlock, Biggar.

Mule ewes topped at £136 cosigned by M/s Wight, Midlock with pens of heavy ewes regularly achieving returns of over £115, and medium Mule ewes trading at £100-£108.

Hill ewes sold to £120 for Cheviots from RD Dixon, Cowburn, Corrie. Whilst Blackies topped at £100 consigned by Millantae Farms, Lockerbie, with heavy pens of Blackie ewes in big demand. Swaledale ewes regularly achieving rates of £65-£70 with the best £70+

Rams to £210 for Texels from TC Whiteford, Tercrosset, West Hall.
