Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,674 comprising of 3,584 prime hoggs and 3,090 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 28th March 2024.
A mixed show of cast cows consisting of mainly grazing sorts. The sale topped at £1,231 and £1,066 for Beef Shorthorns from JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick with Limousins to £1,020 shown by WA Crozier, Embley, Hexham and Galloway cows topped at £982 from DHS Woodhouse, Gibstown, Roweltown. Top per kilo of 189p and 186p for Limousins from Embley with Beef Shorthorns to 188p x2 from Pilmuir.
A smaller show of 3,584 hoggs were forward to a full contingent of purchasers, a two-tier trade was witnessed with well fed hoggs meeting new levels, whilst leaner types would be better marketed to vendors advantage here on a Tuesday in the store market. 39kg to 50kg commercial hoggs proved very very, good to sell. Trade expected to be on fire Thursday 4th April and hoggs will be sold to vendor advantage.

Top per head of £275 for Texels from B Ryder, Newton Cottage, Moffat.

The sale topped at £320 for Texel ewes from M Buchan, Torrax, Kirriemuir. Sharplaw Farms had a great run of ewes forward to average a colossal £298.
Suffolk ewes topped at £310 for a beast of a ewe consigned by Barnside Estates, whose run of 52 Suffolk cross ewes averaged £219.
Hill ewes to £150 for Cheviots from HF Hamilton & Co, Sonoma, Carruchan and Blackface ewes to £145 from R & WD & SR Charlton, Whiteside, Haltwhistle.
Rams topped at £205 for Texels from Torrax, Kirriemuir.
