Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,234 comprising of 3,148 prime hoggs, 234 spring lambs and 2,852 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 23rd May 2024.
A mixed show of cast cows forward, all classes remain in demand with more numbers sought after on a weekly basis. The sale topped at £1,411 for an Angus shown by W Semple, Brackley, Campbeltown which also achieved top price per kilo of 196p. Limousin to 188p from A Carruthers & Son, Peela Hill, Bewcastle and Friesians to 174p from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton.
A select show of 234 spring lambs sold to a top of 455p for Texel lambs from R Johnston, Kimmeter Green, Annan with Zwartbles to 440p from D Steen, Coxhill, Moffat. Top per head of £224 and £220 from HM Martindale, The Land, Ecclefechan and Texels to £215 from Kimmeter Green.
Plenty of demand about for all classes of lambs 35kg to 50kg + with numbers keenly sought after for the coming weeks sales. Many more are required as purchasers left with orders incomplete. A similar show of 3,148 hoggs were forward. a seriously moderate show of hoggs with Quality hoggs in short supply and still very much in demand albeit slightly less on the week, whilst bottom end or under cooked hoggs proved very difficult to cash.

Top per head of £300 for Texel and Beltex hoggs from M/s F Graham, River Park.

A larger show of 2,852 ewes were forward to a very busy ring of purchasers, heavy ewes showed a big improvement on the week whilst lightweight ewes maintained recent weeks trading. More can be marketed to vendor advantage at longtown

The sale topped at £295 for Texel ewes from J Pirie, Machrihanish, Campbeltown.
Hill ewes sold to £150 for Cheviots from J Common & Son, Crossdykes, Corrie.
Rams to £215 for Charolais from Beckfoot.
