Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,489 comprising of 1,303 prime hoggs, 1,092 spring lambs and 3,094 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 13th June 2024.

An improved show of cast cows were forward, trade remains buoyant and more numbers required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand. The sale topped at £2,116 for a Beef Shorthorn shown by D & T Bradley Farmer, Wester Parkgate, Dumfries, with Angus to £1,395 from JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick, Charolais topping at £1,372 from D & M Craig, Auchlin, Ayrshire with Limousins to £1,178 from RJ Anderson, Penchrise, Hawick and Shorthorns sold to £1,044 from DH Anderson & Co., East Buccleuch, Roberton. Top per kilo of 198p from Penchrise for Limousins, with others to 176p from WN Douglas, Catslackburn, Yarrow. Angus to 186p from Pilmuir and 178p Penchrise, Shorthorns to 180p from East Buccleuch and Charolais to 176p from Auchlin.

A similar entry but more mixed show of 1,092 spring lambs forward from 20kg to 90kg. Demand slightly easier due to abattoir priorities changing for the festival. Outlets forecast to be back on lambs next week.  

Top per head of £215 for Texels from Highfield Farming Ltd, Knock, Duns with top price per kilo of 472p for Beltex shown by JA & LA Thompson, Woodhead, Scaleby.

Overall average of 394.5p (SQQ 395.4p)

A smaller show of 1,303 hoggs were forward. A small gathering of hoggs sold to extreme rates with all classes of well finished hoggs in big demand.

Top per head of £244 for Texels from T Hetherington, Old Hall, Staffield, whose run of 156 very well fed heavy hoggs averaged £221 per head.

A smaller show of 3,094 ewes were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers ensuring all classes maintained last week’s trade, numbers are forecast to tighten and trade maintain. Still a sellers market and ewes are sold to vendor advantage.   

The sale topped at £270 for Texel ewes from WN Douglas, Catslackburn, Yarrow.

Mule ewes to £188 for a huge Mule ewe from R Vevers, Burnfoot Hill, Eaglesfield.

Hill ewes sold to £140 for Blackfaces from Woodside Farms.   

Rams to £260 for Texels from Beoch Farmers, Beoch, Stranraer.
