Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 4,510 comprising of 883 prime hoggs, 1,224 spring lambs and 2,403 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 27th June 2024.

A mixed offering of mainly non-farm assured hill cows were forward, trade remains similar with numbers required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at £1,320 for Angus from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm with British Blues to £1,185 from GF Davies & Co., Upper Glendiven, Langholm. Top per kilo of 179p and 176p from Sorbie with Blue Greys selling to 176p from KT Anderson & Son, Hepple Hill, Consett and Galloways selling to 168p from WJ Henderson, Whitehill, Corrie.

A similar entry of 1,224 spring lambs forward. Well bred and well fed lambs met a nice trade, however lighter grass fed lambs met a slight resistance, in which there was an abundance of, trying to catch the trade.

Top per head of £221 for Texels from Maronach Livestock, Balhall with top price per kilo of 405p for Beltex shown by Messrs McDowall & Co., Culquhasen, Glenluce.

Overall average of 341.2p (SQQ 336.0p)

A larger show of 2,403 ewes were forward. A stronger show with a lack of plainer sorts forward, all classes of ewes maintained last week’s high rates of returns. Best ewes dearer on the week.

The sale topped at £300 for a pen of fourteen Texel ewes from Beckfoot.

Hill ewes sold to £138 for Cheviots from G & N Laing, Twislehope, Hawick.

Rams to £235 for Charollais from Beckfoot.
