Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,625 sheep comprising 2,591 spring lambs and 6,034 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 8th August 2024.

An improved show of cast cows were forward, consisting of mainly native cows. All classes met a brisk trade throughout with more numbers required here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,428 for an Angus shown by Messrs M Baxter, Kilnhill, Gilsland with other Angus selling to £1,377 from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm. Simmental cows peaked at £1,341 from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie who also sold an Angus at £1,287. Shorthorns sold to £1,239 from Meikle Whitriggs Farms, Corrie and British Blues to £1,218 from TL Hogg & Son, Ryehills, Canonbie. Top per kilo of 238p from Kilnhill with Shorthorns to 210p from Meikle Whitriggs.

A much larger show of 2,591 lambs forward, with another increased ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold to similar trade on the week. Many more lambs required to fulfil an ever increasing purchaser demand.

Topping the sale was 478p for a Texel from Sophie Sutherland, Bogrie, Canonbie which also achieved the top per head of £220.

Incorporated in today’s sale was the Annual Prize Show & Sale for young handlers which was kindly sponsored by The Farmers Guardian. A pleasing show of 30 lambs were presented to the judge and master stocksman Mr Stephen Graham, Miller Hill, Gilsland, who awarded the following prizes with Overall Champion going to Sophie Sutherland, Bogrie, Canonbie with her 46kg selling at £220 to Robert Smith and also receiving the Hugh Taylor Memorial Cup. Reserve Champion going to Maisie Muir, Windyknowe, Annan with her 52kg lamb selling at £185. Many thanks to Stephen for his expertise, the sponsors and all the exhibitors. Well done to all involved making this show and sale a great success.

A huge show of 6,034 ewes and rams were forward, selling to 19 active buyers, being the most competetive ewe centre in the North of England. Numbers handled with ease as purchasers flock to Longtown to take advantage of the show on offer. The prices again speak for themselves being unrivalled as the still river runs deep. More could have been sold to vendor advantage and required on a weekly basis to satisfy demand.

The sale topped at £310 for a Texel ewe shown by R & A Harrison, Hazel Head, Wigton.

Mule ewes peaked at £188 from TJ Hall & Son, Horlsey Hill, Hawick.

Hill ewes sold to £150 for Cheviots from Messrs Bernard & Dodds, West Deloraine, Ettrick.

Rams to £310 for Texels from J & F Earnshaw, Achamore, Isle of Gigha.
