Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward a tremendous entry of 7,105 sheep comprising of 3,505 prime lambs and 3,600 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 12th September 2024.

Cast cows remain in demand with more numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer requirements. The sale topped at £1,897 for a Charolais shown by Shankbridge End Farm Ltd, Hethersgill, which also topped at the price per kilo at 204p. South Devons sold to 175p from J Thomson & Son, Howcleugh, Hawick with British Blues to 174p from G & F Davies, Upper Glendiven, Langholm.  

A larger show of 3,505 lambs forward, well bred and well fed lambs sold regularly over 300p per kilo with a large proportion of leaner grass fed lambs on offer, comprising of 641 lambs weighing between 25-33kg.

Best lambs in short supply throughout the sale.

Beltex lambs topped the sale at 343p consigned by W Stewart & Son, Newton of Inshewan, Angus with top per head of £222 for Texels from J Coghill, Burnside, Caithness.

A smaller show of 3,600 ewes and rams were forward. A good selection of the best ewes forward which were keenly bid for and well fleshed heavy ewes very good to sell, however a slight resistance met for leaner hill ewes today.
