Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 8,645 sheep comprising of 4,018 prime lambs and 4,627 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 17th October 2024.

A smaller show of cast cows forward, yet all classes remain in demand. The sale peaked at 178p for Angus cows from R Moscrop & Son, Border Rigg, Bewcastle with Friesians selling to 168p from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton.

A similar show of 4,018 prime lambs was forward, a lot of wet lambs forward albeit all meat a real treat. Well finished, hard fed lambs were in big demand easily maintaining recent weeks trade whilst grass fed lambs and leaner sorts proved harder to place. The leaner end of lambs are easier marketed at this venue on a Tuesday through the store market. Beltex lambs topped the sale at 359p from C Nicholl & Son, Newton of Fotheringham, Forfar and from M & M Byrne, Thorthwaite Close, Wigton.  

Top price per head of £180 for Texels from A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick. 

Overall average of 288.0p (SQQ 291.8p)

Another large show of 4,627 ewes and rams was forward. Lightweight hill bred ewes proved easier to cash being firmer on the week. Heavy ewes maintained last weeks high rates of return being short of purchaser requirements.
