Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 9,057 sheep comprising of 5,289 prime lambs and 3,768 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 5th December 2024.

Another pleasing entry of cast cows forward, with the vast majority being Galloways. Trade remains buoyant throughout with all classes in demand and numbers needed on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer requirements here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,393 for Galloways from Eskdalemuir Forestry, Clerkhill, Eskdalemuir, who also sold others at £1,309 and £1,205. JW Forster & Son, Smithsteads, Bewcastle also sold Galloways at £1,230. Top per kilo of 199p from Clerkhill, who sold others at 187p, 185p and 184p with Smithsteads selling to 185p and Galloways from Emblehope, Tarset to 182p.

Another substantial show of 5,289 prime lambs forward easily maintaining last weeks high rates of return. Smalls proved to be in big demand and can be sold to vendor advantage next week, if you have any 32-38kg fed lambs next week is the week for them. Heavies and export lambs maintained trade of recent weeks and numbers are keenly sought after for the coming weeks sales.

Please note: The weekly primestock sale between Christmas and New Year will be held on Friday 27th December 2024 at Longtown Auction. Sale to commence 7am with cast ewes and 12 noon with prime lambs.  

The sale topped at 548p and £340 for pure bred Texel lambs from Marygate Farms, who’s tremendous run of 72 went on to average 341p and £184.79.  

Beltex sold to 425p from DB Angus, Barrogill Mains, Caithness.

A larger show of 3,768 ewes and rams were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers. Best Texel ewes met some resistance, albeit still looking well sold with numerous pens breaching £300, whilst others easily maintained last weeks very high rates of return. Ewes in general are a serious trade for the time of year and numbers are wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy demand at this centre. Keep the numbers rolling.

The sale topped at £335 for a tremendous Texel ewe from G Ralston & Son, Linton, Morebattle.  

Beltex peaked at £230 from G Dinnie, Brigview, Aberdeen.  

Suffolk ewes sold to £218 from D & T Bradley-Farmer, Wester Parkgate, Dumfries.  

Mule ewes sold to £178 HS Mactier & So, Bog House, Mochrum.

Hill ewes topped at £138 for Cheviots consigned from S & J Fisher, Cleuchhead, Hawick.

Blackfaces ewes again proved in big demand selling to £136 from B Cheesbrough, Lanehead, Kirkcambeck. With several pens breaking £120 barrier.  

Rams to £235 for Oxfords from Messrs Rutherford & Co., Guards, Gretna.
