Longtown Christmas Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited held their first Annual Christmas prize show and sale of prime cattle, prime bulls cast cows and prime lambs on Saturday 7th December 2024.

The pre sale Prize Show was very kindly sponsored by WM Armstrong, AW Jenkinson, Murray Farmcare (headline sponsors).

Aspatria Farmers, CCIB, Macmin LTD, PJ Tractor Parts, Tynedale Agriculture, C&D Rural, TG Norman, Dodd & Co, Fowrass Fabrication, Capontree Vets,  Robinson Mitchell and Bespoke Financial.

A substantial entry of simply outstanding cattle on show for the Christmas prize show and sale of prime cattle. Judging was in the very capable hands of Sam Wooley, Wooley Bros, Sheffield. Sam had the unenviable task of judging the finest show of cattle to grace the ring at Longtown in recent times, eventually awarding his overall supreme championship to the first prize British Blue steer consigned by M/s W Boyd, Terregles which went on to realise 510ppk or £3843 selling to Kitson Butchers, Northallerton.

The female champion went onto receive the overall reserve championship which was consigned by M/s I Grainger, Kilnclose. This very smart red heifer went onto to realise 430ppk and £2601 also selling to Kitson Butchers, Northallerton.   

The top price per kilo on the day went to a very stylish British Blue Heifer consigned by M/s Statton, Highlaws, Morpeth going onto realise 610ppk or £3477 selling to an undisclosed purchaser going for further breeding.

Producers are commended for the quality of cattle on show today, simply outstanding.

A fantastic show of lambs being consigned by vendors from all over the British Isles descended to Longtown with a colossal 89 Pens of 5 and butchers pairs out to show, which is testament to the time and effort taken by producers as the quality was second to none. Judging was in the very capable hands of Mr Gerallt Wyn Roberts, Field Fresh who waded through the classes giving each and every lamb his full attention.

Butchers Pairs

A fantastic line up of pairs were presented to the master judge who dually awarded his overall supreme championship to the first placed Any Other Lowland Breed pair (Dutch Texel) consigned by regular vendors M/s J & A Moralee, Hard Riding, Bardon Mill. This pair of outstanding lambs went under the hammer to reach the top price of the day, realising £450 or 979ppk selling to the judge for Field Fresh.

Reserve champion pair of lambs went to the first prize Beltex lambs over 45kg consigned by another regular vendor M/s T.N. Cavers, Sorbie, Langholm which went onto realise £300 or 638ppk selling to regular purchasers West Scottish Lamb.

Another outstanding show of primestock of which all producers are commended. Very well done.

PENS OF FIVE LAMBS

Next up for the master judge to get his hands on was the pens of 5 which again didn’t disappoint. After a long deliberation the overall championship went to weekly supporters M/s Lines, Killowcraw, Campbeltown. These outstanding lambs that were superbly turned out, went onto realise £235 or 573ppk to Field Fresh.  

The reserve championship went to M/s Hall, Horsley Hill, who’d been knocking on the door in the pairs got their reward in the fives. These lambs, expertly turned out went on to sell for £255 per head to West Scottish Lamb.
