Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward an entry of 7,076 sheep, comprising of 4,376 prime hoggs and 2,700 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 6th March 2025.

A similar show of 4,376 prime hoggs were forward to a strong ringside of buyers ensuring all classes met a firm trade, again, Thursday’s trade rewarding customers with premium returns that can only be attained later in the week. Keep the numbers coming to Longtown to receive premium returns.

Export hoggs were highly sought after with many selling to premium rates and short of supply

Light hoggs slightly firmer from previous weeks, with over 49% of the sale being hill bred hoggs

Well bred heavies still commanding very good returns whilst common heavies met some resistance.

Big numbers of fed 35kg-45kg prime hoggs of all breeds are wanted in the coming weeks by purchaser request. Please do not hesitate to contact our auctioneers for further marketing advice.

Many more well finished hoggs are wanted every week and will be sold to vendor advantage

The sale topped at 457.1p for a pen of Beltex hoggs shown by MacTaggart Bros & Co, Castle Douglas.

Top per head of £265 for Texels from Douganhill Farms, Orchard Mains.

Overall average of 351.5p (SQQ 364.5p)

Incorporated in the weekly sale of prime hoggs was the prize show and sale of Cheviot hoggs kindly sponsored by PJ Tractor Parts, Longtown. The directors, auctioneers and all the auction mart staff would like to thank all parties involved with today’s show and sale.

Judging was left in the very capable hands of Morgan Reynolds, Scotbeef who awarded the prizes as follows:
