Kelso Ram Sale 2021

C & D Auction Marts Limited were privileged to sell 439 rams of all breeds at the Solantel Kelso Ram Sales on Friday 10th September 2021.

154 MV Accredited cross bred rams were forward in ring 3, with quality in abundance, buyers packing the ringside were prepared to bid strongly for tups with size, skins and shape. Forty tups selling at £1,000 plus and an overall average of £902, C&D achieved the top three prices and highest average in the ring.

Heathery Hall

Lot 1428 from A Taylor Heathery Hall (top price crossbred tup) sold for 5800

The highlight of the sale was the pen of Beltex cross tups from A. Taylor, Heathery Hall; a pen of power, length, skin and shape, turned out to perfection by Alfie & Ann. The pen was topped by ‘Billy the Kid’ a three-quarter Beltex ram selling at £5,800 and breaking the Kelso record for a cross bred ram. He sold to Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft.

Following hot on his heels was Heathery Hall's second ram, another the same way bred, which sold at £2,800 to Messrs Davies, Bala, Wales.  Matching this price was a stable mate, with a touch of Charollais blood in him which sold to Zoe Hall, Horsley Hill.

Thackwood Charollais

Lot 1820 sold for 3800 (top price Charollais) from Messrs J Wales Thackwood

156 registered Charollais rams were forward in ring 6, the first time that C & D have held the entire ring.  The demand for Charollais was exceptionally strong, with buyers prepared to bid well for their picks of the day. This resulted in 8 four-figure prices and the Kelso Charollais record being broken with lot 1820 selling for £3,800 from Messrs Wales & Family, Thackwood, with this ram heading to Messrs Yarr, Whitton Mains. Following closely was an earlier shearling from the same home; this ram sold to £2,600 in favour of Messrs Jenkinson, Whinfell Park. These leaders left Messrs Wales finishing the day with an average of £1,017 for the days trading, overall. Charollais breeders would leave Kelso delighted with the results achieved by C&D Marts and look forward to 2022.

A fantastic entry of 97 cross bred rams in ring 16 were forward to a jam-packed ring of purchasers ensuring all tups met a serious trade, topping at £1,400 for a Charollais x Beltex, with stature and presence in spades, consigned by JP Gray, Unthank, Alnwick, Northumberland. Also at £1,400 was a Suffolk x Texel from R Runciman, Allanshaws. A further seven lots surpassed £1,000, achieving an overall average of £664 for a 97% clearance.

A small but quality offering of Texel rams in ring 19 sold to a busy ring of purchasers. Topping at £1,300 for an outstanding shapely Texel consigned by first time vendor R Roddan, Springfield Farm Court, Gretna. Another four shearlings surpassed the £1,000 barrier, achieving a very satisfactory average of £741 for a 100% clearance.
