South Country Cheviots to 1,400gns
At Longtown on Tuesday, C & D Auction Marts Ltd. conducted the second annual show and sale of select breeding females for the Cheviot Sheep Society on Tuesday 21st February 2023.
With bidders from as far afield as Surrey and Inverness, the small but high-quality entry attracted an enthusiastic response from the large attendance of breed supporters backed up by some strong online bidding.
30 head sold with ewes averaging £621, gimmers £480 and geld hoggs £315.
The judge, Ogilvie Jackson, Cossarshill, Ettrick selected his champion from the Castle Crawford pen; the herd`s ewe from Mr J. Cochrane was a three crop Castle Bulldozer daughter in-lamb to the £20,000 Crossdykes Rob Roy. She led the trade selling at 1,400gns to Gareth Wyn Evans, Gwynedd.
Standing second to the champion in the ewe class was a three-crop ewe from W.J.C. & S.J. Weir, Mainside, Kelso; scanned twins to GDM Detroit she sold at 1,050gns to A. Roskell & Partners, Wampray.
Other in-lamb ewes sold to 750gns, Cooms and 700gns each for Castle Crawford and Mainside.
At 1,000gns, P. Spencer, Rhigail Farms, Rosshire took the top priced gimmer from T. Elliot, Hindhope, Jedburgh. She was sired by Mountbenger Zidane and in-lamb to an Alemoor-bred ram.
Other in-lamb gimmers sold to 900gns from R.H. Paton Castle Crawford, sired by Glenochar Konockout and in-lamb to Crossdykes Rob Roy, she went to A.J. Kennedy & Son, Mitchellhill, Broughton with Hindhope gimmers at 700gns and 600gns.
Geld hoggs topped at 420gns for a Becks Ringleader daughter from Hindhope.
