Longtown Beef Shorthorns
At their June Sale of Pedigree Beef Shorthorns and other breeding cattle at Longtown on Tuesday 18th June 2024, there was a good ringside in attendance backed by online bidding. Beef Shorthorns sold to 2,800gns for females and the same figure for bulls.
Topping the female section was Steve Swales Dairy Ltd., Cliviger, Burnley with the sole in-calf heifer entry, Bradhill Butterfly 3, a smart red and white poll. A daughter of Meonhill Fire Fox and out of a Pikelowe Legend daughter, she is in calf to Napoleon of Upsall and sold for 2,800gns to Messrs Armour, Bowston Hall, Burneside. Cows with calves at foot sold to 2,000gns for Westbroad Joyful Roxy with a bull calf, from Rachel Jordan, Annaghanoon, County Armagh and 1,900gns for Gradi Irania 237, also with a bull calf at foot, from Steve Swales Dairy Ltd. P. & J. Bailey`s Roadway herd from Appleby took 1,800gns., twice, for the white cows, Newfield Mistletoe Nonpareil and Roadway Holly, each with a white calf at foot.
Unserved heifers, many young ages, topped at 1,400gns for Overwater Loopy Lou from James Irving`s organic Overwater herd from Uldale, Wigton. Cows and heifers with calves or in-calf averaged £2,163 and unserved heifers averaged £1,224.
Leading the bulls at 2,800gns was Harrietsfield Seamus, a roan from K.G. Anderson, Rowanburnfoot, Canonbie. By Farlam Loneranger from a homebred Glengloy Dollar cow, he sold to the Archbank Farming Co., Moffat. Charlie Fletcher and Jack Kay, Blackcleugh, Eaglesfield took 2,500gns. for Redstones Sovereign, a Chapelton Pioneer son bought by Messrs Cooper, Crailloch, Wigtownshire, with other bulls to 2,000gns from Stouslie, Hawick.
An entry of seven young Belted Galloway heifers from Anna Coulthard, Castlefield, Ivegill sold well to 1,300gns and 1,100gns. The annual consignment of ten Shorthorn cross Galloway heifers with Angus cross calves from R. & M. McIntosh, Borthwickshiels, Newcastleton attracted great interest and averaged £2,135, selling to £2,550 and £2,400. Belted Galloway cows with calves made to £1,080, ex Mains of Machermore and Stabiliser heifers from West Hall topped at £1,020.
