Kintyre Rams to £1,400
On Saturday 21st September 2024, C & D Auction Marts held the annual sale of rams and breeding sheep at Campbeltown for the Kintyre Agricultural Society. Quality was tremendous and trade was strong throughout with the entry of 101 rams strongly sought-after and achieving new heights for this event. Buyers were present from a wide area for the show of rams which were ably judged by Greg Gillespie. Overall champion was a Bluefaced Leicester shearling from A. & J. Pirie, Machrihanish selling at £1,400 to N. & F. McNaughton, Dalmore, Tayinloan.
In all ten four figure prices were achieved, At £1,200, another Bluefaced Leicester from D. Armour & Son, Kilkeddan went to R. Millar, Auchaleek with two others from Messrs Armour`s pen making £1,000 each and their eleven rams averaging £850. A small entry of Suffolks met their usual animated demand with N. & F. McNaughton making a sale at £1,200 to R. Millar, High Cattadale, with other Suffolk shearlings, from Thomas Cameron, Gartvaigh going at £1,100 and £1,000. A strong pen of Beltex cross Texel shearlings from R. & J. Lines of Killacraw saw two sales at £1,000 each and an average of £815 for their seven. The reserve champion and top priced Texel shearling, from N. McArthur, Brackley Parks also sold for £1,000. Overall, shearling rams averaged £639 with ram lambs levelling at £364.
A nice entry of 450 breeding females were well sold with gimmers to £220 for Mules from F. Lyons, Fernoch. Blackface gimmers sold to £175 ex Brennanlea with ewe lambs to £118 for Suffolk crosses from Highbank Park who also had ewes at £120. A good run of Blackface ewes from Ifferdale made to £130 and £110. Store lambs to £101 for Suffolk crosses from High Dalrioch.
