Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
Store Lambs
C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,008 store lambs at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 13th October, 2015.
A far better quality show attracted a huge company of local and distant buyers, trade for all classes was much dearer on the week. Top of £64 for Texels from Glenkiln Farms, others £63 Sunnycroft, £60 Gillalees; Beltex £60.50 No 2 Newton Cottages; Charollais £61 Glenkiln; Greyface £60 Cacra Bank, £55.50 Lamperts Cottage, £55 Greensburn; Suffolk £60 Borthwick Brae; Cheviot Mule £56.50 The Mark, £54.50 Low Moor Howe and Routin Lynn, £54 Sleetbeck; Lleyn £53.50 Low Tipalt; Hampshire £49 The Mark; Kendal Rough £41 Church View; Swaledale £35.50, £33.50 East Stobbylea.
Cast ewes to £62 Harwood House, cast rams £98 Newton.
Cheviot lambs (2,889) incorporated the Hill Northies Show & Sale which was ably judged by Mr Bob Cartner, Blackwoodridgehouse, whose awards were as follows:-
1st – Messrs J.R. & S.N. Hislop, Windyhaugh, sold at £55.50.
2nd – Sorbietrees Farms Ltd, Sorbietrees, sold at £55.
3rd – Messrs J.R. & C.J. Ward, Whitstone Hill, sold at £57.
Cheviots met a fantastic trade with several new buyers present. Top of £56.50 Lymiecleugh, £55.50, £55 Girnwood, £54.50 Glendinning and Lymiecleugh. Other Northies to £56.50 Bradley, £56 Greenside.
Blackfaces (2,090) were not as strong but trade was animated throughout. Top of £65 the Row, £50 Gibbs Hill and Greensburn.
Breeding Sheep
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward a massive show of 5,217 breeding sheep, comprising 2,283 Hill Ewes at their 2nd sale, and 2,934 Lowland sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 13th October 2015.
A busy ring of buyers for Blackface and Cheviot ewes saw trade dearer than at the main sale.
Lowland ewe lambs and ewes were a good trade throughout, although the shearlings proved harder to cash unless they had been suckled.
Also included were 4 dispersals and 2 reductions which met a fast selling trade. Details will follow.
Hill ewes were in strong demand and many more could have been sold to advantage. The sale topped at £94 for Swaledale shearlings from Border Rigg and £80 for 5 year old Cheviots from Arkleton.
In the Lowland section the sale topped at £108 for a grand pen of suckled Texel shearlings from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, followed closely at £102 for the 2nd pen from the same home and also for a pen of outstanding 7/8th Texel ewe lambs from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick.
