Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
STORE LAMBS
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,805 store lambs at their sale at Longtown on Tuesday 11th October 2016.
With a lot more distant buyers present and a larger entry forward, trade was sharper throughout the sale with prices slightly dearer on the week.
Top of £78 for a Beltex from Mr G McGregor, Longrigg, Roweltown. Texels to £75 Low Trifergus, others to £69.50 Routin Lynn, £69 Achamore & The Craggs. Suffolks to £72.50 Routin Lynn and £67 Nether House. Charollais to £63 from Bushfield. Greyface to £58.50 Penpeugh, £58 Allensgreen and £57 The Mark.
Swaledale to £28 Wolfhills. Hampshire to £55 Atkinson, The Flatt.
Feeding ewes to £63 from The Row.
Cheviot lambs (3323) A larger show, buyers selective, the strong and best lambs were a strong trade, with smaller types cheaper. Top of £60 for Hill Cheviots from Lymiecleugh, others to £58 Mount Benger, £57.50 Potholm and £57 Parkhill. Hill Northies to £61.50 from Wynholm Bridge, £59 Bradley Farm & Priesthaugh and £57.50 Gillesbie Farms.
Blackface lambs (2187) Buyers again selective. Strong lambs dearer, smaller lambs a similar trade. Top of £53 from Penpeugh and Allensgreen, £48 Blindburn.
BREEDING SHEEP
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward a record entry of 13,853, comprising of 8,805 store sheep and a catalogue entry of 5,048 breeding sheep comprising of 3,287 Hill Ewes (1,605 horned sheep and 1,682 Cheviot) and 1,761 Lowland sheep of all classes at Longtown on Tuesday 11th October 2016, even with a lengthy day selling until 7.30pm the ring remained busy with buyers keen to purchase from the large array of stock on offer.
Breeding sheep topped in the Lowland section at £150 for Texel shearlings from Kedzlie farms, who sold others at £140. Regular sale topper Messrs Bell, Kirkton sold pens of Texel ewe lambs to £140 and £138 (x2).
The Hill section continued at extreme rates and sold to a top of £132 for North Country Cheviot 5 year old ewes from North Deanhead, followed by £125 for 5 year old North Country Cheviot ewes from Walker, Raeburnfoot.
