Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

STORE LAMBS

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,887 store lambs and feeding ewes at their sale at Longtown on Tuesday 25^th October 2016.

Distant buyers more plentiful, locals scarcer, and a very good quality show on offer. Trade was very similar. The feature of the sale was an outstanding entry of over 700 Beltex x Charollais and Texel x lambs from Mr P M Smith, Cocklakes House, Troutbeck, Penrith, which were very well shown and a credit to the vendor. His top price was £69 twice and £68.50 thrice, with his average £4 up on the year.

Top of the day was £73.50 for Beltex crosses from Messrs Edminson, Middle Farm, Crindledykes, Rockliffe. Texels to £70.50 Palmer Hill, £70 Rotherhope and £69 Glencartholm.

Suffolks to £70 Routin Lynn. Greyface to £59.50 Upperburnmouth, £59 Haithwaite & Bayldon, £58 Craigengillan Estate. Lleyns to £64 Harper Hill. Cheviot Mules to £61.50 How Hill. Hampshire to £55 Dunshiel. Herdwick to £40 Red House. Swaledale to £28 The Hagg & Ouston.

Cheviot lambs (1,530) a smaller entry. Trade for the best was very good, lesser lambs cheaper on the week. Top of £57 Granton, £56 Potholm, £55 Craig Douglas & Hopsrigg.

Blackface lambs (2,080) another good show, again the best dearer with smaller lambs similar. Top of £58 Horseholme, £51 Westhills & Prospect House.

BREEDING SHEEP

C & D Auction Marts Limited held their Late End of Season Breeding Sale on Tuesday 25^th October 2016, which saw forward 60 rams of all classes, where recent high rates were maintained with plenty buyers still looking for quality rams. The sale was topped at £420 for a Texel ram lamb from A Bell, Kirkton and purchased by Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise, Great Asby. Mr Bell also sold at £400 to Messrs Morris, Upperduddlewick.

Another fine show of 1,950 breeding females were forward with quality still in demand. All classes met a flying trade and the sale topped at £120 for a pen of Beltex x shearlings from Messrs Fleming, Shoestanes to Messrs Forrest, West Croft.
