Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

STORE SHEEP
The C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 5,776 store lambs and feeding ewes at Longtown.
Another good entry attracted more distant clients, as with the fat trade buyers were cautious although trade was excellent at less money on the week.
The feature of the sale included over 500 mostly Texel and Suffolk lambs from Messrs Hourie from Orkney, whose top was £61 for both Suffolks and Texels.
Top of £65 for Texels from Routin Lynn, others to £64 Greensburn and East Foreshield, £63 Quarry Lodge. Suffolks to £64 Routin Lynn, £62 High Lovelady Shield, £61 Priesthaugh & Heathfield. Beltex to £64 East Foreshield. Greyface to £58 Gibbs Hill, £56.50 Hollands and £56 South Thornberry. Cheviot Mules to £58 Solwaybank. Swaledale to £29 Ouston. Feeding ewes to £41 from Croys Lodge.
Over 2,000 Cheviots forward, trade marginally dearer with more buyer interest. Top of £57.50 for Hill Northies from Gillesbie Farms, others to £56 Dunterley. Hill Cheviots to £53 Glendinning, £52 Crossdykes and £50.50 Linhope.
Over 1,000 Blackface lambs forward, with trade the same as Cheviots, also with more buyer interest. Strong lambs very scarce. Top £40 Balmurrie, £38 Over Kirkhope and Little Tongue.
BREEDING SHEEP
Also today was a special sale of 4,018 breeding sheep of all classes including the 2nd sale for Mule ewe lambs. Also included was the dispersal sale from Messrs McGimpsey, D’Mainholm along with reductions from Byers Farm, Brotherstone and Dormansteads.
A small show of rams was also forward and sold to a top of £360 for a Texel x Beltex from Dormansteads.

However, the breeding sheep proved a very good success, especially for quality and for the best end of stock. Topping at £210 for an outstanding pen of Texel ewe lambs from regular sale topper A R Bell, Kirkton, Hawick, whose run of 103 lambs averaged £157.86.
