Longtown Store Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 5,890 store lambs & feeding ewes at their weekly sale at Longtown on Wednesday 19th September 2018.
Another good show of lambs, although quality was not up to usual standard, extra buyers operating all classes sharper on the week. Top £74.50 & £74 for Texels from High Aikton, £74 Barsalloch, £73 Pilmuir & Quarry Lodge; Beltex to £73.50 Glencartholm, £72 Downham; Suffolks to £71.50, £69 Satchells; Charollais to £68 Whinney Hill (Dixon); Greyface to £63.50 Barsalloch, £59 Greensburn; Cheviot Mules to £63 Gillespie Farms; Lleyns to £61.50 Harwood; Herdwicks to £41 Ulzieside; Blackface to £43 Emblehope; Swaledales to £34.50 East Stobbylea. Feeding ewes to £48 Downam. Cast rams to £35 Ulzieside.
It was the prize show of Cheviots, where there was a fine entry of 2,893 with the quality best for several years. A very large company of buyers present, and trade started off sharp and remained that way for rest of sale, with all vendors going home delighted, with an overall average of £53.67.
The show prior to the sale was ably judged by Edward Eastham, assisted by his wife, of Longburgh Fauld, Burgh by Sands, who had the task to decide his champions. Overall champion came from Messrs Bradbury, Satchells, Lilliesleaf and sold at £68.50 each, 2nd Messrs Dunlop, Commonside, Teviothead and sold at £55, 3rd Messrs Waugh, Effgill, Westerkirk and sold at £59.50. Hill Cheviots 1st Messrs Paton, Castle Crawford, Thornhill and sold at £56.50, 2nd Mrs L Luescher, Glendinning, Westerkirk and sold to £58.50 and 3rd Messrs Bernard & Dodd, West Deloraine, Ettrick and sold at £56.50.
