Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward an entry of 8,108 breeding sheep of all classes at the sale at Longtown on Tuesday 23rd October 2018.
The largest show of lambs so far and most buyers also present with trade the best of the season. Included in the sale was the annual consignment of 800 quality lambs on behalf of P.M. Smith, Cocklakes House, Troutbeck, Penrith, which created a lot of interest and sold very well to a top of £67.
Top £83.50 for Texels from West Farm; Beltex to £73 Rinnion Hills, £72.50 Lower Ashtrees, £72 Shepherds Cottage; Suffolks to £66 Kinning Hall, £65.50 Satchells, & Routin Lynn; Cheviot Mules to £70.50 Longformacus; Charollais to £71 Gillenbie; £70 Gilside; Greyfaces to £65 & £64.50 Hepple Hill, £63 Haliburton; Wensleydale to £55 Hole House; Easycare to £56 Raeshaw Farms.
Feeding ewes to £68 Stell Green, with hill ewes to £66 for Blackfaces from Stell Green. Cast Rams to £47 Holylee House.
At the special show and sale of Cheviot and Blackface lambs, judging was in the capable hands of Craig Bradbury, Satchells, who expertly carried out his duties with his awards were as follows;
North Country Cheviot

Cheviot lambs (3,106) were the largest entry this season again buyers turned out in force, trade was buoyant with all classes very good to sell. Hill Cheviots sold to a top of £64 Upper Hindhope, £60 Castle Crawford, £57 Granton, & Glendinning. North Cheviots to £58 Outer Huntley & Hownam Grange & Priesthaugh, £57 Bradley (Acton).
Blackface lambs (1,196) were the best show so far with trade extremely strong, numbers short of requirements. Top £64.50 Horseholme, £62.50 & £60 Stell Green, £60.50 Town Shields.
BREEDING RAMS
A catalogued of 187 rams were forward with quality rams of all breeds in demand selling to a top of £700 twice from A.R. Bell, Kirkton, with both being purchased by J. Browell, Quarry House.
